Umberto Celano, PhD
“Umberto Celano is a Senior Scientist at imec (Belgium), with expertise in semiconductor technology, device physics, materials and nanoscale measurements for integrated circuit (IC) at advanced nodes. He received his Ph.D. in Physics from the University of Leuven in 2015. Previously, Umberto received his B.Eng. in Electronics Engineering and a M.Sc. degree in Nanoelectronics from the University of Rome Sapienza, Italy. His interests encompass solid-state physics and materials science for application in nanoelectronics and emerging devices. In this area, he conducted research at the border between engineering and fundamental science in various institutions such as imec, KU Leuven, Osaka University, and Stanford University.
Umberto is the recipient of the Rogen A. Haken Best Paper Award at IEDM (2013) and has authored or co-authored 60+ papers in international journals and conference proceedings. He works with the metrology working-group in the International Roadmap for Devices and Systems (IRDS) and he is a member of the early carrier editorial board of Nano Letters. Previously, Umberto received his B.Eng. in Electronic Engineering and a M.Sc. degree in Nanoelectronics with honors from the University of Rome Sapienza, Italy.

Dr. Goyal has over twenty-five years project management and administrative experience as principal investigator in managing technical projects of a diverse nature and involving multiple organizations. He also has experience as President & CEO and financial head as well as experience
in interacting with private equity firms such as venture capital firms and angel investors.
He is a Member of the National Academy of Engineering (NAE) and the National Academy of Inventors (NAI). He has been elected Fellow of eight professional societies: the American Association for Advancement of Science, the Materials Research Society, the American Physical Society, the World Innovation Foundation, the American Society of Metals, the Institute of Physics, the American Ceramic Society and the World Technology Network.
Dr. Goyal received a B.Tech.(Honors) in Metallurgical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur (India), a MS in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering from the University of Rochester, NY and a PhD in Materials Science & Engineering from the University of Rochester, NY, executive business training from the Sloan School of Management, MIT and an executive MBA from Purdue University and an international executive MBA Tilburg University (The Netherlands).
